Virtual CFO Cost in India (2026): Retainer Tiers vs a Full-Time CFO

Virtual CFO cost in India: monthly retainer tiers compared with a full-time CFO
How much does a virtual CFO cost? At Startup Advisory, virtual CFO retainers start at ₹10,000 a month (Essentials), ₹25,000 a month (Growth) and ₹45,000 a month (Fundraise & Scale). That is about ₹1.2 lakh to ₹5.4 lakh a year, against the ₹18–25 lakh a year plus perks that a full-time CFO in India typically costs.

“Virtual CFO cost” is one of the first things founders ask, and most of the answers online are vague. This guide sets out our own published starting prices, what each tier covers, how the annual cost compares with a full-time hire, and what moves a quote up or down.

One caveat up front: there is no regulated or standard fee for a virtual CFO in India. Every firm prices by scope. The figures below are Startup Advisory’s, taken from our Virtual CFO service page and our published price list. Use them as a benchmark when you compare quotes, and check what each quote actually includes.

1. How much does a virtual CFO cost per month?

Our virtual CFO retainers start at ₹10,000, ₹25,000 or ₹45,000 a month, depending on the tier. These are starting prices: the final monthly fee is set after a short scoping call, based on your stage and the work needed.

TierStarting priceBest forWhat it adds
Essentials₹10,000 / monthEarly-stage startups and small businesses that need financial structureMonthly MIS and financial reporting; cash-flow tracking and budgeting; GST, TDS and ROC compliance oversight
Growth₹25,000 / monthScaling startups crossing ₹1 crore+ turnoverEverything in Essentials, plus forecasting and scenario planning, unit economics and margin analysis, and a monthly strategy review with founders
Fundraise & Scale₹45,000 / monthCompanies raising capital or preparing for due diligenceEverything in Growth, plus the financial model and projections, investor deck and data-room support, and due-diligence and CMA data for lenders

2. What does a virtual CFO cost per year compared with a full-time CFO?

Over a year, our starting prices come to ₹1.2 lakh, ₹3 lakh and ₹5.4 lakh. A full-time CFO in India typically costs ₹18–25 lakh a year, plus perks. Even the highest tier, at its starting price, is less than a third of the low end of that range.

OptionMonthlyAnnual (12 months)
Virtual CFO: Essentialsfrom ₹10,000from ₹1,20,000
Virtual CFO: Growthfrom ₹25,000from ₹3,00,000
Virtual CFO: Fundraise & Scalefrom ₹45,000from ₹5,40,000
Full-time CFO—typically ₹18–25 lakh, plus perks

The comparison is not only about salary. A full-time CFO is a fixed cost you carry whether the month is busy or quiet. A retainer can be scaled up for a fundraise and back down afterwards. 3. What makes a virtual CFO quote higher or lower?

Scope drives the price. The tier sets the floor, and the quote moves with how much CFO time your business actually needs each month. The factors we look at when scoping are:

  • Stage and goal. Monthly reporting for a young company needs far less time than a live fundraise with a data room and investor questions.
  • Number of entities and locations. Each extra company, branch or GST registration adds reporting and reconciliation work.
  • Transaction volume. A D2C brand with thousands of orders a month needs more analysis than a services firm with a few large invoices.
  • Reporting frequency and audience. Founder-only MIS is lighter than monthly board or investor packs.
  • State of the books. Clean, current books let the CFO work on analysis from day one. Backlogs have to be fixed first.
  • One-off projects. A financial model, a lender’s CMA data or due-diligence support adds work in the months it is needed.

4. Is bookkeeping included in the virtual CFO fee?

Not automatically, so check the scope in writing. A virtual CFO interprets the numbers; someone still has to record them accurately. On our price list, bookkeeping is a separate service with its own monthly and annual packages, so your quote will state whether transaction recording is bundled in or priced on its own.

Compare like with like. A low monthly quote that leaves out MIS, compliance oversight or forecasting is not cheaper if you end up paying for those separately. Ask every provider for a written list of monthly deliverables before you compare prices.

5. Which tier fits your startup’s stage?

Match the tier to the decision you are facing, not to your headcount. As a rough guide:

  • Essentials if you have books but no monthly MIS, budget or cash view, and compliance deadlines are starting to slip.
  • Growth once revenue crosses roughly ₹1 crore and you need forecasts, margin analysis and a regular strategy review to decide on hiring, pricing and spend.
  • Fundraise & Scale when you are raising capital, preparing for due diligence or applying for bank funding and need a model, deck and data room that hold up.

Many startups move between tiers: Growth for most of the year, Fundraise & Scale for the months around a round. If you are not sure you need a virtual CFO at all yet, read when should a startup hire a virtual CFO and what a virtual CFO actually does.

  • Is the fee fixed monthly, and what exactly is delivered each month?
  • Is bookkeeping included, or priced separately?
  • Who is the named CA or CFO on the account, and how often will you meet?

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no regulated or standard fee; each firm prices by scope. At Startup Advisory, virtual CFO retainers start at ₹10,000 a month for Essentials, ₹25,000 a month for Growth and ₹45,000 a month for Fundraise & Scale. A custom quote depends on your stage and the work involved.

Usually, yes. A full-time CFO in India typically costs ₹18–25 lakh a year plus perks. Our virtual CFO starting prices work out to ₹1.2 lakh, ₹3 lakh and ₹5.4 lakh a year, so even the highest tier starts well below the low end of a full-time salary.

Essentials is for early-stage startups and small businesses that need financial structure. It includes monthly MIS and financial reporting, cash-flow tracking and budgeting, and oversight of GST, TDS and ROC compliance.

Growth (from ₹25,000 a month) suits scaling startups crossing ₹1 crore or more in turnover and adds forecasting, unit economics and a monthly strategy review. Fundraise & Scale (from ₹45,000 a month) suits companies raising capital or preparing for due diligence and adds the financial model, investor deck and data-room support.

Check the scope in your quote. A virtual CFO works on top of accurate books. On our price list, bookkeeping is a separate service with its own monthly and annual packages, so your quote will say whether transaction recording is bundled in or priced separately.

Because the work varies. The number of entities, transaction volume, how often you report to investors, whether a fundraise is under way and how clean your books are all change the time needed. The tier price is the floor; the quote reflects your actual scope.

With us, a free 15-minute discovery call comes first, then a scoped monthly quote, usually the same day. After KYC we connect to your books and set up MIS and dashboards, usually within 1–3 working days, so most clients are up and running within a week.
