What are the current GST rates in India?

After the GST 2.0 reform effective 22 September 2025, GST has three main slabs — 5%, 18% and 40% — plus a 0% (nil) rate for essentials. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were merged into these. A few niche rates, such as 3% on gold, also continue. The rate that applies depends on the HSN/SAC classification of your specific goods or service.

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

To add GST to a base amount, multiply by the rate: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100, and the gross price = amount + GST. To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price, divide the price by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to get the base amount, then subtract that from the price to find the GST component.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For a sale within the same state (intra-state), GST is split equally into CGST (collected by the centre) and SGST (collected by the state) — each is half of the total GST. For a sale between two states (inter-state), a single IGST applies at the full rate instead.

Is GST registration mandatory for my business?

GST registration is generally required once aggregate turnover crosses the threshold — ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services in most states (lower for special-category states) — and is mandatory for inter-state supply and most e-commerce sellers regardless of turnover.
